Its hard to imagine a greater concentration of superb asphalt road networks crisscrossing mountainous provinces. Thailand is blessed with rivers and valleys that drain the Tibetan plateau. The Tibetan mountain ranges and foothills also extend southward into northern Thailand. Those mountains and valleys provide wonderful riding routes throughout the northern provinces of Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Nan, Phrae, Mae Hong Son and Tak.
The People
Northern Thailand is also home to a number of ethnic hill tribe groups originating from the Tibetan plateau. As well as the Thai people, there is also a large Chinese Thai population, plus Tai Yai and Karen from Myanmar in the western border provinces. Similarly, there are is cross border population influences along the Laos and Cambodian border regions. Multiple religious beliefs blend harmoniously into rural village and urban lifestyles. Centuries of people traversing Asian trade routes has given Thailand a unique cultural diversity.
